:: Internships in India ::

Let's do it!

Well, obviously I can feel the anxiety that you feel as a student hearing the term 'internship'. What is the big deal with this word these days? Initially, I really failed to understand. 'I have done my internship' or 'I have not done my internship', how the hell on earth does that matter? I am having the equal qualification than the next door girl whom I see every morning dashing past the apartment gate and shouting at every cab driver and hurling abuses because she is as usual late for her office. Similarly, I know my subject as good as one can expect from an under graduate. Moreover, regular college, lectures, ultra demanding college clubs, hectic tuitions, and then frequent birthday parties, family gatherings, obligations, God where do I actually have time? Then why should I even care to bother my peace of mind?

But then seriously, I realized whom are we kidding here? First question these days an interviewer asks is- 'So how many internships have you bagged?' And as usual you fall from the sky because you had not even thought that this could actually determine your eligibility to work with the company or the organization, but unfortunately it does. Therefore, my friend it is time now. Pull up your socks and if required even your spirit, drag yourself out of that cocooned privilege and take yourself to the zenith to make things happen and trust me, its wrong when you think that internship is all about unpaid toiling, carrying coffee from one cabin to another, reading slush, being bossed over at every opportunities and sitting and biting your pen aimlessly. No, the idea stinks and time has massively changed. Wake up and give the required boost to your career.

Internship with the correct place and in correct time is not just an incentive to your profile but is also fun. Life as an intern can be truly happy and enlightening. Just squeeze out a little time from your busy or not so busy schedule and take a chance. A lot of big companies along with intern recruiters are just a click away, waiting to hire you. All that you need is the energy and the foresight. Come on, make things the way you want them to be rather than dismissing everything with the wave of your hand and whiling away time convincing yourself- 'Okay, not today, but tomorrow'.

International Internships
Cover Expenses, Gain Career Experience in an Internship Abroad - By William Nolting

Why do you want an international internship-to live and work abroad, or to gain specific career-related work experience? If the former, many other work abroad opportunities may be easier to get or less expensive. These include short-term paid work abroad programs, teaching English abroad, or volunteering abroad.

Where. Many internships related to international careers, especially ones with international organizations, are actually located here in the U.S.-especially in centers of international activity such as Washington DC or New York. But it is often possible to combine an international internship with an overseas location.

How. Tuition-based study abroad internships sponsored by universities provide credit towards your degree. Financial aid can usually be used to help meet expenses. Tuition costs range widely. Unpaid, non-academic internships account for the majority of internships, both in the U.S. and abroad. If living costs are high, these may be as expensive as tuition-charging internships but without the benefits of credit and financial aid. The main benefit of such internships will be professionally-related experience and better prospects for career positions.

Developing Internship
Before checking out the internship listings online or contacting employers internships, make sure you make a list of goals and establish what you hope to gain from doing an internship. By skipping this step you may find yourself in an internship where you are unhappy and one that is not related to your future career goals or aspirations. On the other hand, an internship is a time to explore different career fields especially if you are unsure of what you want to do after graduation.

Why Do You Want to Do an Internship?
Internships will provide experience to see if a particular industry or career is the right choice for you. By doing several different types of internships, students can compare different career fields and better understand where their skills and interests are best suited. For example, if you are a business major and interested in marketing and advertising, you might want to get an internship in both of these areas to find out more about each one and learn about the duties and responsibilities of each job.

Internships are not for me
"Internships are not for me, I am in the first year of college" This is a common remark I heard as I met students who have just started with college. I was a little surprised as I started my first internship after my 10th boards!

The trouble is that most students either don't know about internships or don't value their importance. The common myths around internships that I have heard:

> My father will try and get contacts for internship
> We don’t get internships without contacts
> Internships are for MBA students
> I cant do a part time internship
> I don’t think anyone will hire me

The list goes on. These are excuses that a lot of students find comfort in to say why they don't do an internship. The fact is that times have changed. Employers today while hiring a graduate ask "So how many internships have you done in 3 years?" The typical answer they are looking for is ateast 5! Yes, that's what it takes to understand the meaning of "corporate life". Unless, you experience working for atleast 6-8 months along with college you will not be very high on the priority for an employer. It's a hard fact but true. In addition to the employability, internship also helps you build a resume for higher education. Any MBA school would give preference to students who have done more than class-room learning and canteen hopping! Well, last but not the least an internship gives you the opportunity to learn and improve your skills. It helps you to understand what you like and what you don't.

So give internships a shot.. they are the new mantra for success. Any queries for internship can be answered by the Help Desk at www.duplacements.com. DUPlacements is a social enterprise run by students to spread the importance of internships and connect students with employers.

How to look for the right Internship?

Internships are many - find the one that suits you
Internships come in all shapes, forms and sizes. Some are paid and some are unpaid. Some last for a summer while others continue through the school year. Some internships are local, but others offer employment abroad.

Many people think internships are for MBA college students, but opportunities for graduate students exist as well. A graduate internship can open the doors to the working world, showing you what it's like to have a boss, attend meetings, and meet deadlines. Internships also introduce you to experienced people who can help guide you toward a career.

Real Deal: Environmental Organization
It was the end of his 12th class in high school, and Rahul needed something to do for the summer. He also wanted to earn a little money, so he visited his school career counselor for advice. The counselor suggested an internship with a local nonprofit environmental organization. Rahul had never worked in an office before, but he decided to try it. Today, he is still interning with the organization as a senior in high school. He even helped a friend get hired.

How to Start Your Search
How do you find the right internship for you? Start by answering these questions:
   > What interests you? Do you like photography? Flying? Computers?
   > What kind of internship do you seek? Do you want to work during the summer or the school year?
   > Do you need to earn money or could you work for free?
   > What you want out of an internship? If you're interested in the legal field, your search should start with law firms, not banana farms.

Use a Variety of Resources
Many resources exist for finding internships. Employers often advertise internship positions through schools. Ask your high school counselor or career coordinator about these opportunities. You might also find out about internships through a school club. And don't forget family and friends. You may want to know more about the accounting field, and your friend's accountant mom might welcome your help.

If there's a specific company or organization you'd like to work for, don't be afraid to inquire directly. Even if they've never had an intern, you might be able to convince them they need one by being clear about how you could help.

The Internet also provides a wealth of resources. Helpful sites include:

     www.duplacements.com
     www.internshipprograms.com
     www.internabroad.com
www.idealist.org - allows you to search for internships at nonprofits such as environmental groups
www.volunteerinternational.org - lists volunteer opportunities abroad.

Real Deal: Local Newspaper
Preeti wasn't sure she wanted to be a journalist. She liked writing for her high school newspaper, and the field seemed exciting, but she didn't know much about it. To help make up her mind, Preeti landed an internship at the local newspaper through her high school business club. Her job was to help out in the office, but she also convinced the editor to let her do some reporting.

To her surprise, the editor gave her an assignment right away: report on Friday's high school football game. Preeti wasn't really interested in football, so she spent the game interviewing parents of players. When she typed up her story, she realized she didn't even know the final score! That taught her to make sure she got all the facts, and during her junior and senior years, Preeti covered everything from rodeos to a local burglary.

As an intern in the office, she processed subscription checks, wrote classified ads, and worked in the pressroom stuffing advertising inserts into newspapers. She learned every aspect of the newspaper business and decided to major in journalism in college.

Evaluate Opportunities
To make sure you get the most out of your internship, ask lots of questions. Find out exactly what your duties will be, and who will help teach you the skills you want to learn. You can even ask to speak to previous interns about their experiences. All this preparation will ensure the internship you land is right for you.

Rahul thinks every student should try interning. "Go outside your boundaries, outside your neighborhood, do something you've never done before," he says. He also recommends building relationships with those who can teach new skills. "Find someone to learn from," says Rahul. That way, no matter what you do, your internship will be worthwhile.
